Learning the many intricacies of horticulture can be intimidating and even discouraging. Like most things worthwhile, devoting a little time and effort can yield promising results. Hopefully, these tips will help you to improve your gardening skills and become an expert gardener.
Make sure that your sod is laid properly. The soil requires preparation before sod can be laid. Pull out any weeds and break up the soil. Make sure your soil is flat and compacted. Gently sprinkle water on the soil until you are certain that it is thoroughly moistened. The optimum layout of sod rows is to stagger them with offset joints. Firm the sod down to form a flat, even surface, and fill in any gaps between the sod with a little soil. Keep the sod moist and avoid walking on it until it is well-rooted, usually two to three weeks.
Try using root cuttings to grow new plants. During wintertime, when the roots are dormant, you should cut them. Use a sharp gardening knife to cut the longest and thickest roots off of the plant. Separate the roots into cuts of about 2 inches each. Fill up seed trays with a peat and grit mixture, then lay each root cutting on the soil’s surface. Then add a coating of grit and peat on top. Leave the root cuttings in a cool area and you will have brand new seedlings within a month. Plant each seedling in its own small pot until they grow big enough for outdoor planting.
Put your horticulture plan down on paper. Make a detailed list of everything that you would like to plant, and include a clear drawing of your available growing space. You can then use that drawing to plan out where each item should be planted. Think about the height of the plants and the space they need or exposure to light and moisture.
Soak seeds overnight, preferably in a cool, dark place. Use a small container filled with water to nearly the top and place several seeds in it. This will allow your seeds to be hydrated and get a head start when growing. The seeds will now have a greater chance of maturing and surviving.
